Love wins! On Tuesday, December 13th, President Biden signed the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act (H.R. 8404) into law. The bill codifies interracial and same-sex marriage and repeals the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). DOMA had banned federal recognition of same-sex marriage by limiting the definition of marriage to that of a union between one man and one woman. According to a recent NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist poll, 68% support same-sex marriage.
"The road to this moment has been long, but those who believe in equality and justice – you never gave up."
“This law and the love it defends strike a blow against hate in all its forms, and that’s why this law matters to every single American.”
-- President Joe Biden
