In our opinion: Had enough? Join us

Just days ago, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a budget resolution that calls for dramatic cuts in Medicaid and the federal food stamp program. If fully implemented, the GOP majority in the House — including our own congressman, Rep. David Rouzer — is now on record supporting a reduction or elimination of health insurance and food programs for more than 18,000 of Brunswick County’s poorest residents, all to help fund a tax cut for the rich.

At this point — and perhaps in the future — it’s worth asking whether the nascent Trump Administration has done anything you support. Are you and other Americans, including the 80 million on Medicaid, suffering from the negative effects of a president that fills us with fury and dread? Is it time for sensible Americans to unite against the chaos that is Donald Trump and his MAGA minions in Washington and Raleigh?

If so, what can you do to make an impact? Join us! If you are currently a concerned but unaffiliated voter, BCDP welcomes you. We also ask that you consider registering with the Democratic Party  — the oldest political party in the U.S. and the only major party remaining that supports and defends equal justice, voting rights, the rule of law, democracy. Help make us bigger, better, and stronger.

In Brunswick County, Republicans are moving here by nearly a three-to-one margin over Democrats. We can’t control that tide. However, unaffiliated voters who lean Democratic have a special power: The media and the political parties, from federal to local, track voter registration numbers. So, an increase in registrations with the Democratic Party would go a long way toward demonstrating a strong repudiation of MAGA.

What other organization can muster the support of concerned citizens throughout the country? Who better to mobilize protests against Trump and his authoritarian oligarchs? What other political organization has passed laws like Social Security, equal rights, and — yes — Medicaid that benefit citizens across the board?

Certainly not the Republican Party.

Here in Brunswick County, we’re aware of various “nonpartisan” groups that want to be active and make a difference. Their members are motivated and sincere, and we fully support their zeal. We also support local grassroots efforts that can generate a positive agenda, much as we did in the 2024 campaign against over-development.

However, this is a time when all citizens who cherish democracy need to unite against the Trump menace. The Brunswick County Democratic Party already has a strong infrastructure, significant support from the NC Democratic Party, a network of allies, and the resources in place to mobilize effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner. So what do we need? More concerned citizens to take action with us!

BCDP has multiple committees and teams — some long-standing, some new — that would benefit from more volunteers to take up the cause of fighting for our democracy. There's something for everyone, from spreading the word as keyboard warriors on social media platforms like Next Door, to joining our Rally Squad (to plan and participate in protests), to keeping track of our local GOP-controlled government on our Commissioners Watch Team. It all starts at the grassroots level with our precinct structure and grows from there.

During the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, Benjamin Franklin made a memorable call for unity in a speech urging all the colonies to endorse the famous document. “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately," he said.

BCDP asks all who are driven to fight for our democracy to join with us under the Democratic Party banner for the biggest possible impact. We're all in this together!
