In our opinion: Ten steps to political sanity

If you have been depressed, anxious, and angry over the state of politics, you’re not alone. Even with President Biden’s dramatic announcement he’s withdrawing from this November’s election — and Vice President Kamala Harris’ dramatic entry into the race — the drama and suspense are reaching new heights.

Many of us are feeling the strain and letting doubt and dread overwhelm us. We need to keep our eyes on the prize! So here are 10 ways BCDP is recommending to help you reclaim your sanity for the fight ahead.

  1. Meet some candidates. No more Republicans running unopposed in Brunswick County! We’re running awesome Democrats up and down the ballot. Go meet them, support them, and volunteer for them. We guarantee you WILL be impressed with their qualifications and passion.

  2. Volunteer with BCDP. We’d love to have you on our team! There are even activities such as spreading content for our social media and sending postcards to voters that you can do from home. Go to our website if you’re interested.

  3. Invest in Democracy. If you’re too busy to volunteer, or if too many candidates and causes are battling for your money, become a monthly donor to BCDP and we’ll do the rest! Your financial support will enable us to reach more voters through all media.

  4. Turn off your television. Political programming is designed to keep you engaged and enraged, with endless BREAKING NEWS keeping you riveted to your television. You’re marinating in stress hormones and your nerves are fried. Political stress is literally making you sick. The cure is as close as your remote control.

  5. Ditch the drama. Your “friends” on social media and in real life may be compounding your stress, especially those outside North Carolina who are SHOCKED at our horrific MAGA Republicans. Yes, we know. True friends would rather console you than stress you out. You can also seek solace by becoming familiar with our policies and beliefs.

  6. Get outside. Pets are probably absorbing your political stress. Take them or a friend, or go alone; head outdoors and walk, run, swim, play tennis, golf, pickleball, go to the gym. Even yard work like chopping down nuisance vegetation is remarkably therapeutic.

  7. Curate your feed. If your e-mail, text messages, and social media feeds are flooded with political stressors, cull your subscriptions, disconnect from threads, mute and block offenders, and seek out alternative content that will calm, inform, and uplift you.

  8. Breathe. This election season is seemingly endless, and you have ZERO control over most of the developments. Practice mindfulness (there are even apps for that!) and make yourself a mantra that you repeat as needed. Visualize a BLUE TSUNAMI washing away the stain of MAGA and leaving our land cleansed of dread and shining with hope.

  9. Educate yourself and others. Many folks aren’t aware of the EPIC progress we’ve made in fielding Democratic candidates this year. Learn more and share the good news with friends who may despair of ever turning Brunswick County and North Carolina “blue.”

  10. Remember: When Dems vote, we win every time! That’s why MAGA Republicans are desperate to curtail our voting. Getting out the vote is JOB ONE at BCDP, and with YOUR help, that blue wave will be a BLUE TSUNAMI!
