Letter to the editor: Chickens will roost, Brunswick Beacon

It is noted in Grammatist that the expression “chickens will come home to roost” is used to convey that bad deeds or mistakes will eventually catch up with the person(s) making them. There are several examples of this expression in our area.

Public schools in Brunswick County lost teachers and staff to neighboring counties when adequate funding was not provided for salaries and supplies. Millions of dollars are being spent for water purification equipment to remove PFAs or “forever chemicals” from our drinking water because the number of water inspectors in the NC Environmental Quality Department was reduced and water quality regulations were relaxed. Property damage from flooding has exploded because developers were allowed to destroy wetlands and/or build homes in areas susceptible to flooding.

Rather than focusing on providing funds for flood victims in the Southport area and western NC, our local officials in the NC General Assembly are currently diverting funds previously designated for public schools (Leandro Case) to private school vouchers ($465 million).

Traffic problems will continue to worsen because plans are being approved for hundreds of homes to be built before Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) reports are considered and/or the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) is updated. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to predict that the quality of life in Southport will decrease significantly. The chickens will come home to roost!
