Make No Mistake, Women's Rights Are on the Ballot in November

Watch President Biden's forceful statement as he signs an executive order aimed at safeguarding women's reproductive rights (June 8, 2022).

The radical right-wing majority U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe vs. Wade. The fallout for women's health has already begun, with devastating consequences. Trigger laws went into effect immediately in some states, making most abortions illegal. The National Right to Life Committee, the oldest and largest driving force behind abortion bans in this country, is now pushing for a TOTAL nationwide ban, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

What can we do? First and foremost, we can increase our Senate majority to overcome the Republican wall of authoritarianism and obstruction. This would make the votes of recalcitrant "Democratic" Senators Manchin and Sinema irrelevant as well. More Democratic legislation would be on the table: codifying Roe v. Wade, protecting voting rights, eliminating the filibuster, and possibly increasing the Supreme Court's membership. (The Constitution does not designate the number of justices who should serve.) The alternative -- Mitch McConnell back in charge -- is unthinkable!

Further, we can hold and increase our majority in the House of Representatives, and garner more Democratic seats in our state legislatures.

Finally, we can protect our court system from further erosion at the hands of right-wing, authoritarian extremists. At the state level in North Carolina, we must preserve our current Democratic majority on the NC Supreme Court and elect Democratic judges across the board to preserve the rule of law and democratic principles. These judges will serve as a much-needed shield against Republican attempts to give partisan state legislatures the power to overturn election outcomes that are the will of the people.

**You still have access to the reproductive care you need in North Carolina, where abortion remains legal. We need your vote to keep it that way!** Our Democratic Governor, Roy Cooper, took further steps on Wednesday, July 6 to ensure women's rights. He signed Executive Order 263, that would “take several steps to defend access to reproductive health services in North Carolina.”

Our candidates, Cheri Beasley (U.S. Senate), Charles Graham (U.S. House), and Eric Terashima (NC General Assembly House), will fight for women's health care rights. And, our slate of outstanding judges will work to protect the rights of all citizens (visit: Our Judges).

In short, we can VOTE! Women's rights - and democracy - are on the ballot on November 8.
