Press release: Randall calls out opponent for putting special interests ahead of voters

Katherine Randall, the Democratic challenger to North Carolina Senator Bill Rabon, today called out her opponent’s cozy relationship with special-interest contributors to his North Carolina Senate campaign.

“My opponent has raised almost a half-million dollars so far,” Randall said. “It’s clear his supporters – many of them special interests with deep ties to the real estate development and construction industries in the 8th Senate District – expect him to use his influence in Raleigh to their advantage.”

The district includes all of Brunswick, Columbus and part of New Hanover counties.

Randall noted Rabon’s affinity with special interests in North Carolina closely parallels his Senate committee assignments and his own business ventures. “My opponent’s membership in the Senate

Transportation and Transportation Appropriations committees, coupled with generous contributions from the Carolina Asphalt Association, the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, and $12,200 from a trucking company CEO, can’t be a coincidence,” she said.

Similarly, Rabon has supported legislation favoring development firms active in the state. Rabon was a sponsor of legislation that lessened responsible, local oversight, further fueling what has become uncontrolled construction, particularly in Brunswick County. “Our rapid growth, among the fastest in the nation, results in so much clearcutting and additional traffic that it adversely impacts our quality of life,” Randall asserted. “Our residents don’t like it, but Rabon supports it.”

“Banks, with their interest in making money through construction loans and mortgages, along with contributions like almost $19,000 from one

prominent developer, dovetail conveniently with my opponent’s own development interests in Brunswick County,” she said. “And we need to bear in mind that Rabon owns a real estate firm as well”

Randall said voters in North Carolina’s 8th Senate District understand Rabon has become a pawn of the special interests at the expense of their own. “It’s time to restore integrity to public office,” she said.

“We want better public education, reproductive choice and a clean environment in my district and throughout North Carolina,” Randall continued. “During his 14 years in office, my opponent has repeatedly failed his constituents on these issues, focusing instead on how he and his business friends can profit from his position. I’m running for office because I will put the interests of all my constituents first.”
