Shelley Allen of Holden Beach Elected Chair
Of Brunswick County Democratic Party
Shelley Allen of Holden Beach was elected Chair of the Brunswick County Democratic Party at the county party’s annual convention on April 15. After joining the Brunswick Democratic Party and working on the communications team, she was elected first vice chair in 2021. In 2022 she served as acting chair when the party's chair, Eric Terashima, ran for legislative office. Also elected at the convention, held at the party’s headquarters in Bolivia, were: Arthur Hill, 1st Vice Chair; Kristine Garrity, 2nd Vice Chair; Michael Rush, 3rd Vice Chair; and Sherry Williams, Secretary. Victor Gallo was appointed Treasurer.
As the county’s new Democratic leader, Allen says she plans to build on the many strong organizing and communications initiatives begun by her predecessor to expand the party’s membership and visibility.
Allen has spent most of her career in education including teaching in elementary school, and later focusing on research and literacy, having earned a Ph.D. in reading education from Ohio State University. After raising their son in Richmond, where she served as a consultant for two literacy non-profits before returning to teaching, Allen and her husband, Mark, moved to Holden Beach in 2020.
