The resurgence of white supremacism in the news just last week from Buffalo, NY and Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, is shocking and part of a trend that threatens to reverse decades of progress on civil rights and democracy. These events are particularly relevant to our area as the Wilmington Massacre of black Americans by white supremacists was the only successful coup in American history, yet Brunswick County's congressman, David Rouzer, recently voted to continue to revere and honor one of its leaders, Gov. Charles
B. Aycock.
I believe the only way to prevent a return to the days when some of our citizens were disenfranchised because of their race is for all our citizens to learn about our history and their elected leaders' attitude towards it so they can vote for leaders who truly share their values.
